KOKOPO NATIONAL MASK FESTIVAL AND WARWAGIRA MUSIC FESTIVAL 2019
July 10th to 14th 2019
The National Mask Festival is an annual event that takes place in East New Britain where local tribes gather to display their traditional attires and dances.
The festival usually starts at the break of dawn with a Kinavai Ceremony. This is when Duk-Duks or Tumbuans traverse across the seas, chanting and beating their drums until they reach the shore. This Kinavai Ceremony is sacred to the Tolai people of East New Britain. It represents the migration of the New Ireland people moving into East New Britain as Tolai people. The festival program usually begins between 9am to 10am, when local tribes from around Papua New Guinea have a time slot in which they display their different attires, chant songs and dance traditional dances- each with it's own unique story and importance. We have a total of 840 different language speaking tribes in Papua New Guinea so you can just imagine the diversity of such a country. Each language speaking tribe has different cultural attires, dances, chants & beliefs. It is an experience of a lifetime to watch these tribes performing in their traditional attires with their songs and dances. Team spirit !Rabaul dive Adventures team have been busy in June 2018 . This month we have been preparing to be able to handle bigger groups of divers with our beautiful boat called KARAVAS and have been on a lookout for new exciting dive sites. This is a work in progress and hopefully by the end of the year we can present you with many new exciting dive locations.
At the moment we are offering 17 dive sites with an average 2 dives a day . 3 available on request. Our boat Karavas is definitely a winner with a space for up to 16 divers a plenty of space to even sunbathe on the roof for those who are looking to get a little tan. |
